Open positions and withdrawals
The trading strategies used may hold positions for an extended period. Withdrawals from the trading account while positions are open must therefore be made with particular care:
a) Reduction of available margin – If capital is withdrawn while positions are open, the margin supporting those positions is reduced accordingly. The remaining free capital available to absorb market fluctuations decreases.
b) Increased risk of a margin call – If the margin falls below the broker’s required minimum, this may trigger a margin call requiring additional capital to keep the positions open.
c) Risk of forced liquidation (stop-out) – If a margin call is not met in time or the remaining capital is insufficient, the broker may automatically close open positions regardless of whether closing them at that time is economically appropriate. This can realise losses that might otherwise have been avoided if markets later recovered.
d) Impact on the trading strategy – Insufficient margin may force the trading strategy to close positions early or at unfavourable times, which may negatively affect actual performance.
Capital Partners should therefore plan withdrawals with due regard to open positions and the current margin situation and, where possible, consult the relevant broker or account manager before withdrawing funds. In particular, no withdrawal should be made without considering its impact on remaining margin and the risk of forced liquidation.
